Chapter Fourteen

THE SHOOTERS WERE a new breed of augmented reality gamer. Toxic men in armour with updated guns. Their high-tech metal-clad bodies completed their divorce from the organic world. Their brains charged with the thrill of control. Something they couldn’t master within themselves.

They glided on turbo-charged roller blades, dispensing their deadly ammunition. And as Carter pressed hard on the accelerator, one militarised nutter with death on his mind kept us within striking distance.

“That way,” Hudson hollered.

Carter swerved down a side street, honking as Radical Faith Alliance devotees jumped out of his way. More shots were fired, but not at us. Screams from the innocent, simply on their way to various dinner parties, echoed from between the buildings.

“What has Stuart done?” My voice trembled. “This is a nightmare.”

“Hold on,” Carter yelled.

He zigzagged around town as if the cityscape was a maze. Sage slipped out of my arms and onto the floor, littered with shattered glass. I pulled Sage back on our seat. I cautiously pulled out three shards that had entered his skin.

We lost our pursuer. Carter continued down random streets on his way out of this fractured metropolis. Sage comforted me from panic. Hudson studied a roadmap Carter printed before our escape. Going online for anything was too risky.

Stuart Manning’s soulless eyes haunted me. Sage shook my rigid body but couldn’t curb my mounting fear. We would be dead before dawn.

Sage wiped the sweat from my forehead. He kissed my cheek. Then my mouth. I pulled away, but he grabbed my shirt and brought my lips back to his.

His earthy scent took me out of my head. His very essence became my haven. A perfume with magic qualities.

The man I’d often protected was now in charge. Looking out for me. Keeping me sane through his touch. And his need to love. And his very existence…

“Guys, you don’t have time for that now!” Carter wiped grime off the windscreen. “You need to look out for those armoured killers.”

“Stuart’s new soldiers,” I replied.

Our bus rediscovered the speed limit as we passed our faithful tottering the streets. But a big yellow vehicle among several flashy cars stood out like a eunuch at an orgy. We watched for armoured gamers constantly, fearing we’d meet our doom at any moment.

When country air entered the damaged window, angst kept us silent. I held Sage tighter when I saw a sign indicating that Cradle Edge was only a hundred kilometres away. His eyes widened. I swallowed hard.

Carter hit the brake. In front of our bus were three augmented warriors with guns raised. A black military vehicle was parked on the opposite side of the road. One of the gamers shot our headlights. They entered.

One threw a pink ball on the floor. It smashed. Mist rose. Everyone coughed. My eyes stung. Hudson tried to run, but weapons were aimed at her. I passed out.
